Today I finished lesson 4 in Wordly Wise and defined the LOTF vocabulary words. I learned some punctuation rules, and I started researching careers. I took 2 career interest inventory tests to see which jobs suited me, and I will research them tomorrow. We also discusses symbolism, imagery, and allusions in LOTF. I think that stuff is pretty cool. We even played a symbols game!

Vocabulary Lesson 4 Paragraph:

My mom is teaching me punctuation for when I write things in quotes. I was using periods, but I learned to replace periods with commas and not to captitalize the next word when I say something like, “He said.”

I am also learning to keep the tense the same in my writing because I mixed them up using present and past tense. So she helped me edit my story. I will be graded in what I learned the next time.

I am also learning about comma splices. If I want to put two sentences together, I need to either use a semicolon, a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS), or just use a period and make it two sentences. Here is the sentence she helped me with:

Original comma splice (two sentences incorrectly joined by just a comma):

Very few have done it, most have died. (Comma splice = bad!)

Fix 1 (semicolon):

Very few have done it; most have died.

Fix 2 (comma and a coordinating conjunction–FANBOYS–for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)

Very few have done it, but most have died.

Fix 3 (just make it two sentences):

Very few have done it. Most have died.

I chose the semicolon because the two sentences go together like one thought, which is a rule for semicolons.

Foxie and her friends finally departed from the long voyage from Bone Island, a famous island known for its bone doctors. Their course was supposed to go to Marrow Town, but their poor navigation led them to Dog Bottom. The whole place smelled of deteriorated trash and looked like the “Playor” (A human responsible for the city) had despaired in seeing a better town once now so dirty, and all of the inns said, “Keep out if you want to stay alive!” “I hoped for a better “surprise” destination,” Darla barked. “Maybe this is just a bad part of town,” Moxie said hoping to make an approximate guess. “This is downtown! Can’t you see the sign?” Foxie asked trying to move the subject along. “It reminds me of my hometown with all these really skinny dogs slowly shuffling along, and it makes me feel nostalgic,” Foxie added. “Hello… do you want some merchandise to get to your real destination?” whispered an odd looking dog wearing a leather mask shaped like a crow's beak. “Grrrrr…,” Sorin growled. “Oh, you must have caught GrowlMouth Syndrome. I see white fuzz,” the strange dog said making an accurate observation. “I am unaware of this disease. What is it?” Moxie asked curiously. “Can we get out of here?” Django asked nervously. CHOMP! Sorin bit the strange dog, just as he deflected it with the odd shaped beak. “Oh, I forgot; this place is in a quarantine period! People can come in but they cannot come out! Your course has ended and your destination is right here!” “What about the Grow-” Moxie tried to say as she was interrupted. “What?” Foxie said as her jubilant face turned into an expression of someone who was hit by a strong gale, turning her perpetually smiling face into the shape of a low hill on the horizon. “There is a price, but if you pay you will be able to leave. Very few have done it; most have died,” the dog said with a grim face. Foxie’s face was revived but then severed by the next few words he spoke…
